The next generation of Invisalign is here – and it’s all for kids!

Invisalign First is a new system specifically for kids whose teeth are still coming in – they can start straightening their teeth earlier than ever. It gives kids and parents an option if they want to avoid metal braces and allows them to address orthodontic issues when they’re easier to treat.

What Is Invisalign First in North Long Beach?

Invisalign First is an early orthodontic treatment for children as young as six. Orthodontists can use it to correct issues such as:

  • Arch development issues
  • Arch expansion
  • Tooth crowding
  • Gaps in the teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Protruding teeth

Each tray is custom-made – these are not one-size-fits-all trays. The benefit of custom trays is that they fit comfortably and adjust your child’s teeth in a way that is specific to their needs.

How Does Invisalign First in Bixby Knolls Work?

Invisalign First is designed to work through a process called dental arch expansion. The clear aligners expand and contour the jawline, gently manipulating the teeth to increase the width of their arch. Eventually, your child will have a straighter smile, optimal occlusion, and proper teeth alignment, allowing them to eat and speak with ease.

What Happens at an Invisalign First Appointment?

Your child’s Bixby Knolls orthodontist will first determine whether your child is a good candidate for this system. If approved, the orthodontic team will take photos, intraoral images, x-rays, and impressions.

These diagnostic tools will be sent to an Invisalign lab, where custom aligners/trays are made specifically for your child.

What Can We Expect with Invisalign First?

It takes a few weeks for the Invisalign lab to fabricate the custom aligners. Once they’re ready, your child will visit their North Long Beach orthodontist so we can try the aligners on and provide instructions to you and your child.

The clear aligners will gently shift your child’s teeth each day. Every few weeks, your child might need a new set of aligners to continue with each phase of treatment. Some children – typically those with minor alignment issues – only need one set of aligners. Those with more complex cases often need at least two sets.

While your child is wearing their aligners, they can eat whatever they want. Just be sure they remove the aligners before eating.

To practice oral hygiene at home, your child simply needs to remove the aligners, then brush and floss as usual. The aligners will need to be cleaned once a day. Your orthodontic team will provide aligner care instructions and inform you how long your child needs to wear the aligners (typically 20-22 hours per day).

At What Age Should a Child See an Orthodontist for the First Time?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, a child should see a Bixby Knolls orthodontist by age seven. However, if your child’s general dentist notices an occlusion issue before this, they will recommend seeing an orthodontist before age seven.

Some parents think a child should lose all their baby teeth before seeing an orthodontist, but this would actually be a disservice. Many orthodontic issues are easier to correct when they’re found in the early stages.

The way a person’s teeth and jaw joints work together happens in childhood while the adult teeth are still forming. Catching issues while a child still has their primary teeth can negate the need for complex orthodontic treatment down the road. It can also ensure their health and comfort throughout their childhood and adult years.
